Question 1 of Paper 1 in the November 2019 IB Maths Studies exam starts nice and easy, with a straight forward number sets question. You are given 6 different types of numbers and you are required to indicate which number sets (N, Z, Q, R) these numbers belong to. This type of question has appeared numerous times before in IB Maths Studies Past Papers, and there are plenty of examples to try in the RV Questionbanks.

Question 2 is a fairly common style of Linear Models question. A linear model is presented for two companies that manufacture T-shirts. The linear models provide a rule for the total cost for manufacturing x number of shirts. There are 4 question parts (a-d), which ask questions related to the total cost for various manufacturing scenarios, and the number of shirts whereby the two companies have the same manufacturing costs.

**Paper 1 – Question 3**

Question 3 is a challenging Logic question that tests your knowledge of a wide range of logic concepts, including; writing compound propositions in symbolic form, completing a long truth table, and how to justify if a statement is a logical contradiction. This is quite a challenging question early on in the exam paper!

The first and fourth term of the sequence is provided in the question and it is your task to find: the common ratio, the second term, and the smallest possible term where the sum of the sequence is greater than 2500.

Question 8 in Paper 1 (November 2019 IB Maths Studies) involves both compound interest & compound depreciation. This is rare in IB Math Studies Past Papers! A compound depreciation question hasn’t been seen in years, so make sure you know how to modify the compound interest formula (provided in your formula booklet) to turn it into depreciation. The question has two parts, the first is using the compound interest formula to find a future value, the second is using the compound depreciation formula to find the number of years to reach a future value.

Question 9 in Paper 1 is an interesting question, and one that is uncommon in recent years IB Maths Studies papers. It involves a sample space diagram, which is the part of this question that is rare (this could be drawn as a tree diagram, however it would be a large tree). You are required to complete the sample space diagram and then answer three probability questions, which aren’t too difficult if you managed to complete the diagram correctly.

You are required to interpret and understand the exchange rates between 3 currencies from a buy/sell table, then answer two questions involving currency conversion (without commission involved).

Question 11 in Paper 1 is a common type of exponential model question seen in IB Mathematics Studies past papers. This type of question has appeared in nearly every single Paper 1 over the last 3-4 years. An exponential model is provided in the information at the start of the question and it is your task to calculate; the initial population, the population after a number of years, how many years until population reaches a number, and if the model is reasonable given the answers above.

Question 13 in Paper 1 is a hard Descriptive Question, which is very uncommon in IB Mathematics Studies Past Papers. The question provides a complete grouped data table and parts a-c ask you to find/ calculate some straight-forward information like modal group & standard deviation (found using GDC). Part (d) is where this question becomes challenging, and requires some thought & problem solving.

Getting full marks on this question requires a strong understanding of the structure and meaning of a Box & Whisker Plots.

Question 1 in Paper 2 (November 2019 IB Maths Studies) is a common type of opening Paper 2 question. It involves two topics; two variable stats & basic probability. A table of data is provided at the start of the question, and you are required to perform hypothesis testing (define null hypothesis, calculate the chi-squared statistic, state conclusion etc), and then in the final part, answer 3 probability questions based off table of data. Question 4 in Paper 2 (November 2019 IB Maths Studies) is a challenging mathematical models question, with differential calculus components embedded within the last few question parts. A quadratic function is provided at the start of the question and you are required to answer questions involving; intercepts, axes of symmetry, sketching the curve, equations of tangents at certain points on the curve and determining if the function is increasing or decreasing at certain points. All-in-all, a tough question which will test your conceptual knowledge and algebra skills. Strong Graphics Calculator skill will help a lot in this question.

A good opportunity for 15 marks if you are confident in these easier concepts.
